Is Your Air Conditioning System Ready For Summer?

Summer is almost here. You might be planning a vacation, but your air conditioning system will likely be hard at work.

But there’s a difference between working hard and working smart, and we want your system to do the latter. Here are a few steps you can take between now and the summertime to make sure your air conditioning system is well-maintained.

  1. Change or clean your filter each month

Some AC systems have disposable filters, while others have filters that can be cleaned. Either way, pay attention to the filter. When it gets dirty, it forces your air conditioning to work harder to cool the air in your home.

  1. Make sure your outdoor unit is clean

The condenser, the outdoor extension of your AC system, needs to be clear of any sort of blockages, whether it’s plants or debris or dirt. These materials can clog or damage the system and cause it to run less efficiently. Remember to shut off your thermostat before cleaning the outdoor unit.

  1. Clean the indoor ductwork

This is something that should be left to a professional HVAC service.  You can inspect and wipe down the visible part of your ductwork. But remember that condensation can cause moisture to accumulate in your air duct, which can damage your system and lead to mold and fungus. Don’t try to make repairs on your own. Leave water damage to a professional.

  1. Keep an eye on the fan belts

Just like your car, your outdoor AC unit has fan belts. Inspect them on a regular basis. If you need to replace a belt, you can usually find them at a home improvement or hardware store. Just be sure the one you buy matches the system in your home. Again: having the right parts means your AC system works at peak efficiency, which lowers your energy bill.

  1. Have a professional examine your system

Once or twice a year, have an HVAC professional inspect your system. They have the insight to tell you if anything is wrong, and the tools to fix whatever problems they unearth.

If you’re ready to give your air conditioning system a tune-up before it goes to work this summer, contact Stanley W. Cooper. We’ve been installing and repairing HVAC systems in the Philadelphia area for more than 60 years.

Think of these inspections as an investment rather than an expense. You’re spending money to extend the life of your system and to keep your home cool not only this summer, but for summers to come.
